Ethically Made

Understance products are made to last, sustainably. From our birthplace in Vancouver, to our factories, our mission is to provide superior quality garments to our customers. We carefully evaluate our impact on our physical and social ecosystem, every step of the way.

What Does Ethical Manufacturing Mean to Us?

It means that when deciding who we wanted to partner with to manufacture our products, we asked ourselves “Who would we want to work for?” and “How would we want to be treated?”

When you shop at Understance, you can take comfort in knowing that the people who made your products were treated fairly, paid on time, and enjoyed great working conditions.

Great Wages and Working Conditions

Our employees are paid 20% above the regional average.

Did you know that garment workers are subjected to extremely low and often delayed wages?

Treating our employees fairly is not enough so we have gone beyond that to ensure our employees get better than average treatment. Our factory employees are paid 20% more than other factory workers in the region. Since its inception in 2009, our factory has never paid any worker late. We believe that creating superior quality garments requires a level of expertise that can only be cultivated in a great working environment. Most of our factory employees have years of experience handmaking and/or machine sewing our bras to perfection. We value this expertise, and our retention of skilled garment makers is one of the many things that sets us apart.

We are an Internationally Certified Ethical Employer

To show our commitment to ethical manufacturing practices, we obtained certifications from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Our factories are ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety management), and ISO 14001 (environmental management) certified. This means that our practices and facilities have been assessed by the global certification body for management and environmental standards and have passed. It also means that as a company, we are committing to maintaining and consistently improving on our practices.

Reduced Water Waste

Our factories produce 50% less wastewater than other manufacturers

Did you know that the fashion industry contributes to 20% of the world's wastewater?

Knowing this, we were determined to reduce the negative impact our factory had on the oceans. We have partnered with manufacturers that employ state of the art water filtration systems to remedy this problem. All our factories use a two-tier water system. The fresh water is first used for drinking and regular human activities. Then it is recycled and used for garment production. When the water has been used twice, it is then treated one last time before it is released. Overall, our manufacturing process produces 50% less wastewater than other manufacturers.

Recycled Materials

Our tags are made from 100% recycled materials.

Did you know that all our product tags are recycled, and our packaging is all recyclable?

We searched for suppliers of sustainable components for our lingerie, and we discovered that our industry has a long way to go. When faced with a choice between the cheaper option and the sustainable option, we always pick the latter. Our garment tags are made of 100% recycled fibers. Although this costs twice as much as the nonrecycled material, we believe the planet is worth it.

For our product packaging, we opted for paper wrap and cardboard boxes. We considered biodegradable plastic but found that most plastics break down into microplastics. Plastic waste continues to be one of the biggest sources of pollution and we believe eliminating as much plastic waste from our operations is our way of doing a small part in tackling a much larger issue.

Our Leadership

We have 100% female leadership.

Did you know that our team is made up of 90% women?

For too long, men have dictated the design, direction and decision making in women’s lingerie. The year is 2021 and there is no reason for women to simply be the face of undergarment brands led by men. Our team is 90% female, 70% women of color and 100% committed to being the change we want to see in the industry. Making a brand for women by women requires female leadership. Our leadership team is 100% female.

We are committed to portraying honest, unfiltered, and diverse representations of womanhood. Our #1 priority is creating comfortable and lasting pieces that minimize the harm done to the environment. Our bras are designed to meet you where you are at and support you in a small but mighty way along your journey.
